SALEM

: The Kannankurichi police arrested a 20-year-old youth in the city on Saturday evening for stealing four dobermann dogs. Police also rescued the dogs and handed them over to the respective owners.

The youth is identified as

Shanmuga Ponvel

, of

Rajaganapathi Nagar

at Johnsonpet, a farm worker.

Police received the first complaint on May 14 from Sabarish Durai, 32, of Muniappan koil Street of Kondappanaickenpatty, that his two dobermann dogs were stolen the previous night.

Again on May 20, police received two complaints from

Selvaraj

, 62, of Abirami Garden, and Prasanna Kumar, 32, of Kamatchi Nagar in Chinna Tirupathi, that their dobermann dogs were stolen.

Police questioned local pet shops and came to know that

Shanmuga

Ponvel had made queries about dobermann dogs in the area.

Subsequently, police detained Shanmuga and questioned him.

“He confessed to his crimes. The dogs were kept in a farm at Kamalapuram where Shanmuga was working. The youth did not intend to sell the dogs and wanted to rear them himself,” a police officer said. Shanmuga was arrested and lodged at the Salem central prison in judicial custody.
