Cop booked for contempt of court

SALEM

: Police registered a case against the Veeraganur police inspector on Friday for

contempt of court

following a direction from the Attur sub-court magistrate.

The complainant, V Jayaprakash, 28, of Kavarpannai village near Veeraganur in

Salem district

approached the court after the inspector, V Shanmugam, failed to give protection to him and his wife as directed by the court, said a source from the court.

Earlier on August 21, Jayaprakash married J Krithika, 20, of the same village after eloping from their homes. Krithika’s parents lodged a missing case with the Veeraganur police station. The case was heard before judicial magistrate 1 of Attur sub-court P K Sivakumar on Thursday.

During the hearing, Jayaprakash and Krithika told the magistrate that both are above marriage age and wished to get wedded. Subsequently, Krithika said she wished to go with her husband.

Hearing this, the magistrate directed the Veeraganur police inspector to give protection to the couple. “The magistrate told the inspector to drop us in my house,” said Jayaprakash, adding, “the inspector beat me up on our way to my house and dropped Krithika at her parent’s house.”

On Friday afternoon, Jayaprakash approached the court again and submitted a petition against the inspector. The magistrate accepted it and heard the case. Following this, he directed Salem SP Georgy George to look into this issue and register a case against the inspector. The magistrate also ordered the police department to produce Krithika before him within 24 hours.

The case was registered on Friday night and further investigations are on.
