45-year-old woman killed as police jeep knocks her down in Salem

Salem: A 45-year-old woman was killed after a police jeep knocked her down near Salem on Friday. Upset over the accident, kin of the deceased staged a road block near Mallur. They also sought police action against the policemen who killed her.

The deceased has been identified as S Gunavathi, 45, of Gajalnaickenpatti near Salem.

On Friday morning, Gunavathi, her brother K Subramani, 43 and her son S Kumaran, 15, had gone to a private school on a bike to get a seat for her eldest son S Santhosh, a Class 11 student. The trio were travelling on a bike," said Mallur police.

Around 3 pm, they were on their way home when a police jeep attached to Dharmapuri district police, rammed the bike near Mallur. "The police jeep was heading to Salem from Namakkal district," a police official said. In the impact all three were thrown off the bike and sustained serious injuries. Gunavathi succumbed to head injuries on the spot.

The Mallur police rushed to the spot and sent Subramani and Kumaran to Salem Government Super Speciality hospital for treatment.
