DALTONGANJ: He wanted to become an IITian and prepare for the examination by joining a coaching institute of repute in Patna. But unfortunately his parents refused to support him because of their financial constraints.
Depressed with the refusal, J S College student Nandan Kumar Chaubey decided to extract money from his father and hatched a conspiracy plot with his friends.
Choubey's father is a fourth-grade employee in the state irrigation department. He refused to take this financial burden of his son and asked him to pursue a BSc degree from Daltonganj itself.
But Chaubey's ambition forced him to prepare a dangerous plan, said SP (in-charge) S K Jha. He planned to extort money from his father and took the help of his friend Mukesh alias Aman.
Mukesh's father lives in Jalandhar and is a builder there. His ancestral house is at Nawa Jaipur under Paton block. Chaubey reached Mukesh's house on October 28 and from there Mukesh called up his mother saying her son has been kidnapped and asked for a ransom of Rs 20 lakh.
"Chaubey's mother arranged for Rs 50,000 and gave it to Mukesh. Jha said from this, Chaubey took Rs 25,000 and the remaining amount was left with Mukesh. But Mukesh was not the only friend Chaubey had banked upon.
Two of his other friends Digvijay Kumar and Mithilesh Kumar were also involved in the racket to earn a fast buck. Digvijay has enrolled himself in a coaching institute in Chennai to prepare for IIT, while Mithilesh is a student of BCom here. "The trio Mukesh, Digvijay and Mithilesh had made Chaubey extremely ambitious," said Jha.
Mukesh has been nabbed and police are on the lookout for Digvijay, Mithilesh and Chaubey. Mukesh, however, has no regrets. He said he did it for the sake of friendship. tnn
