Mauritius ex-dy PM’s daughter visits ancestral village in Jharkhand

Hazaribag: Sachita Boodhoo (50), daughter of former Mauritius deputy Prime Minister Harish Boodhoo visited her ancestral village in Barkagaon block of Hazaribag district on Thursday. Accompanied by her husband Ajay Bandhu, Sachita visited Simratari village and was given a grand welcome by members of the local community.

The couple landed at Birsa Munda airport in Ranchi and travelled to Simratari village by road. Ajay runs a driving training centre in Mauritius, while Sachita is an officer. Sachita is also known for his literary work and authored several books.


In 1986, Harish traced his roots to the village with the help of the then Union govt, led by PM Rajiv Gandhi and then Bihar CM Lalu Prasad. Harish’s family left the village 200 years ago. Moved with emotion, Harish paid tributes to his ancestors on his maiden visit. He returned in 1991 and formed a trust aimed at contributing to local development, particularly promoting girls’ education. Inspired by his visit, former Barkagaon pramukh Gurudayal Mahto later established a girls’ high school in the area.

Sachita said, “Around 200 years ago, Boodhoo’s great-grandfather, Buddhu Mahto, was reportedly taken to Mauritius by the British as an indentured labourer at the age of 15, after being lured with promises of prosperity.”
