Ranchi: In what the Jharkhand police claimed to be a major success, a commander of banned outfit CPI (Maoist) surrendered in Ranchi on Monday.

Police top brass, including DGP DK Pandey, organized a surrender ceremony for Bharat Lal Singh Khanwar alias Bhanu before media personnel in its state headquarters in

Dhurwa

, where Khanwar said he was the sub-zonal commander of the party's Bihar Jharkhand North

Chattisgarh

Special Area Committee (BJNCSAC).

This came after, according to police sources, Khanwar began negotiating with the forces in July. He got in touch with the police after internal differences flared up with Nakul, member of the party's Koel-Shankh zonal committee and one of the topmost leaders of the banned outfit in Jharkhand.

Khanwar, a resident of

Garhwa

, surrendered under Nai Disha, the police's rehabilitation and resettlement program for bringing armed rebels to mainstream. He did not carry any weapons at the time of surrender.

Police said Khanwar has been taking care of activities as zonal commander since 2008. He was active in Jharkhand's Latehar and Chattisgarh's Balrampur districts. He has 18 cases registered against him in Jharkhand and one in Chattisgarh and also carried a bounty of Rs 5 lakh. IG operations MS Bhatia said Khanwar's surrender will come as a considerable damage to the party's organizational structure and its forthcoming activities in the area.

Khanwar is the 16th member of the banned party to have surrendered under the state's surrender and rehabilitation policy. In August, zonal commander Deepak Sahu surrendered after the birth of his child.
