Dhanbad: The two-day national techno-mining fest, Khanan’ 25, began at
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad on Saturday. It brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and students to discuss the evolving role of mining in India’s sustainable growth and technological future.
Calling mining “the backbone of civilisation”, director general of mines safety (DGMS) Ujjwal Tah traced its journey from the stone age to the digital era. “Every form of progress — from infrastructure to mobile phones and renewable energy — is rooted in mining. The sector can never die. It will only evolve through innovation and technology,” he said.
Tah urged students to focus on research, digital transformation, and circular economy models to ensure efficient resource use for future generations. He also lauded IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s century-old contribution to mining education and safety, describing it as a “visionary institution shaping India’s mining ecosystem.”
The CMD of Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL),
Sanjeev Kumar Singh, stressed on mining’s role in energy security. Even green technologies depend on minerals like copper, lithium, and rare earths, he added.
