Jumbo rescued from well in Ramgarh

RAMGARH: A day after an elderly woman was trampled to death at Sadam village by an elephant, an eight-year old sub-adult elephant was rescued from a well and reunited with the herd at Serengatu village under Gola block of the district on Saturday. The elephant was rescued by the department of forest, environment and wildlife with the assistance of local residents, said a senior forest official.

The elephant was spotted in a well early on Saturday by villagers. It probably fell into the well on Friday night. Forest officials arrived at the spot with heavy earth-mover machine and rescued the jumbo and after hours of operation. Later, the elephant was reunited with the herd on Saturday afternoon, said an official.

Ramgarh divisional forest officer (DFO) Nitish Kumar said the sub-adult elephant got separated from its herd on Friday night and fell into the well. It was rescued by the department of forest, environment, and wildlife with the help of locals after a six-hour-long operation and reunited with five elephants that were waiting in a nearby forest. Early on Friday, a herd had trampled Ramni Devi to death, he added.
