Jharkhand ULB Elections: Nomination Deadline Sees High Turnout for Mayoral & Councillor Posts
Ranchi: The last day for filing nominations for elections to 48 urban local bodies (ULBs) in the state saw a flurry of political activity on Wednesday, as candidates rushed to contest mayoral and ward councillor posts.
Nominations had opened on Jan 29, with scrutiny scheduled for Feb 6. As per official data compiled till Tuesday, 513 candidates filed for mayoral and chairperson posts, while 4,604 nominations were submitted for ward councillor and member positions across municipal corporations, municipal councils and nagar panchayats.
In Ranchi, 19 candidates have filed nominations for the mayoral post.
In Ranchi Municipal Corporation, BJP leader Roshni Khalkho submitted her nomination on the final day. Speaking to reporters, she said the city needed decisive leadership after years without elected representatives. “For nearly three years, Ranchi was without an elected mayor and councillors. My focus will be on accountable governance and inclusive development that reaches every section of society,” she said.
Ajit Lakra, seeking the mayoral post again, also filed his nomination. “Urban local bodies remained vacant for far too long. Elected representatives are essential to address civic issues directly and strengthen people’s participation in governance,” he said.
The election, scheduled in a single phase on Feb 23, will fill posts that have remained vacant since the last ULB polls in 2018. Counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on Feb 27.
