Ranchi: The Jharkhand high court, on Wednesday, directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Deoghar, to inform what steps were taken to run the burns ward in the hospital.
A division bench of Chief Justice MS Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar heard a public interest litigation (PIL) initiated by the high court.
The bench asked the hospital to inform whether emergency services in the burns ward have been started or not.
The court initiated the PIL on Aug 30, 2022, following a report of the death of a victim from burn injuries which was flashed in local dailies. The victim, a Class XII student in Dumka, was harassed by a miscreant named Shahrukh from her locality. Shahrukh was after her for some time and, on not receiving any response, he entered her house and poured petrol on her before setting her on fire while she was asleep, news reports said.
The victim suffered severe burn injuries and was rushed to a local hospital. She was referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), where she succumbed to her injuries on Aug 28, 2022.
The police later arrested Shahrukh and his aide, and they were sent to jail. The accused persons were convicted and sentenced by the Dumka Sessions Court.
