Empowering Transgender Rights: Transgender community to run cafés in Ramgarh; Celebrates new identity and opportunities provided by local administration

Ramgarh: The transgender community will now run two cafés near the district collectorate in Ramgarh from Tuesday.

While inaugurating the facility by a self-help group (SHG) of transgender people, Ramgarh DC Faiz Aq Ahmed Mumtaz said the administration took several unique initiatives for their empowerment, as they depended on begging in markets, bus stops and railway stations even after getting higher education from colleges and universities.


“We recently opened three exclusive toilets especially for transgender people at the bus stop, near the collectorate and at hospitals, and now the SHG group of the third gender will run two cafés near the district collectorate,” Mumtaz said.

He added that the transgender people in the district were also enrolled in the voters’ list, and a weekly outpatient department (OPD) for the third gender started at the sadar hospital in Ramgarh.

Considering the plight to get them respect and livelihood of the transgender people, the administration also started a beautician course for skill development that would provide them with a livelihood.

Himansu Kinnar, who is part of the transgender SHG group, said it was painful and disrespectful for the transgender community, as they found toilets for males and females, and there were none for the third genders anywhere, and they were forced to go for open defecation.

Himansi, who is doing an MBA from Indira Gandhi Open University, praised the Ramgarh administration for giving respect, a separate identity and livelihood.

Sanju Kinnar, another transgender, said that after getting all-around support from the administration, the transgender community also formed the Kinnar Utthan Sangh for the betterment and development of the third gender in Ramgarh.

The district social welfare officer (DSWO), Indu Prabha Khalko, said that as many as 23 transgender people were given identity cards to avail various facilities from the govt and society.
