Ranchi: Ranchi Critical Care Society organised a two-day training for doctors of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) to educate and train postgraduate doctors as well as faculties on diagnosis and management of invasive fungal diseases in India and to train them on the ways to find the infections from clinical parameters.
Talking to TOI, Professor and former head of infectious disease medical microbiology department of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Dr Arunaloke Chakrabarti, said: “We all know about the bacterial infections and the resistance it creates in human body, however very few know about a few invasive fungal infection which are fatal with mortality rate of over 40 per cent.”
“I told the attendees about one such virus called Candid Auris. It can be contracted by a patient in hospital as well as at home but is very difficult to detect. It can be present in air-conditioning of hospital. The infection is difficult to detect.”
The doctors said Candid Auris, which was detected in Japan in 2008, travelled to 43 countries, including India, by 2011. “The pattern of this fungal infection on blood culture reports used to be on fifth position a couple of years ago. However, it has come to first position and that is the reason why doctors need to be trained on its detection and management,” said Dr Chakrabarti.
The visiting experts also said that the Covid-19 also gave a rise to these fungal infections which went undetected and led to death of patients who were already infected with Covid-19.
“The mucormycosis was a type of fungal infection and several papers and studies which were published on these reported that a patient developed these fungal infections not only in hospital but also at home. As part of one of the studies, 25 patients who were in home isolation with unregulated ventilation developed these fungal infections as they were constantly in air conditioned rooms which helped pores to filtrate in their surrounding due to air conditioning,” said HOD of AMRI hospital Kolkata, Dr Subhash Todi.
