Dhurwa Dam Security Boosted After Four Bodies Recovered in Four Months
Ranchi: City police are planning to intensify vigil at the picturesque Dhurwa dam in the wake of recovery of four bodies from the water body in the past four months, with the latest on Tuesday.
In view of the incidents at the dam under Nagri police station limits, police have geared up to take preventive measures so that the tourism potential of the water body remains unaffected. The move comes at a time when the tourism department is planning to develop a floating restaurant at Dhurwa dam to attract more visitors, boosting the local economy.
“It is a matter of serious concern that such incidents are taking place at the dam, where people in large numbers visit to spend a leisurely time. In light of the recurring incidents, we have thought of increasing police patrolling near the dam to ensure the safety of tourists. At present, police conduct several rounds of patrolling at the dam daily to monitor the situation. We will further intensify it,” Nagri police station officer in-charge Praveen Kumar said on Tuesday.
Kumar also appealed to the tourists and locals to contact police if they notice any unusual activities at the dam.
On Tuesday, an NDRF team recovered the body of a 21-year-old man identified as Aman Kushwaha from the dam. Police said that Kushwaha, a resident of Adarsh Nagar in Dhurwa area, may have drowned on Monday evening.
“Although there are no witnesses who saw him jump into the dam to end his life, the recovery of his two-wheeler and shoes from the bridge over the dam sparked concern among locals. They informed police at 9 pm on Monday, following a search operation was launched. But he could not be traced. On Tuesday morning, the operation resumed with the help of NDRF and his body was recovered,” OC Kumar said.
Prima facie, police suspect he died by suicide. “However, we have not recovered any suicide note yet. The body was sent to Rims for post-mortem examination. We have not yet received a formal complaint from the deceased’s family. Although it looks like a suicide attempt, we are investigating to ascertain if there is any other angle,” Kumar added.
A 40-year-old man allegedly died by suicide at Dhurwa dam on April 6, a day after he was saved by local boatmen. Police recovered the body after spotting it underwater. Kumar stated that the deceased, a native of Panki block in Palamu district, was a daily wager in Ranchi and lived in a rented accommodation.
On March 19, a 22-year-old engineering student, Nimisha Jha, allegedly died by suicide at the dam.
