DHANBAD: Bizarre as it may sound but rats have feasted on 10kg cannabis (bhang) and 9 kg marijuana (ganja) kept inside a police station, if a cop is to be believed.

Deposing before the court of the principal district judge Ram Sharma of Dhanbad on Saturday, the cop, Jai Prakash Prasad, who was the investigating officer of a case registered against two persons after the seizure of the contraband items of 10kg cannabis and 9kg marijuana, said he cannot produce the items as they were eaten up by rats.

The case was registered against one Shanbhu Prasad Agrawal and his son, who were arrested after confiscating the contraband from them on December 18, 2018. The confiscated items were kept in the storehouse (malkhana) of the Rajganj police station and Prasad, a cop posted at the station, was made the investigating officer of the case.

Public prosecutor Awadesh Kumar informed the court about the written submission of Prasad in connection with the case and the filing of a station diary in connection with the incident (rats eating up the contraband items).

A senior advocate, Abhya Bhatt, said, “Questions have been raised over the nonchalant way in which storehouses of different police stations where evidence of different cases are kept and maintained time and again but things are yet to change.”

Bhatt added that whatever the fact is, the lack of evidence about the confiscated items is bound to benefit the accused in the case.
