Dumka: An administrative team led by sub-divisional officer (SDO) of Pakur, Simon Marandi, sealed the crusher units and quarries reportedly owned by Ajsu-P leader Azhar Islam and his younger brother in Belpahadi on Tuesday.
"Action has been initiated against Azhar Islam’s quarries under Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS)," the SDO said on Wednesday. The stone traders were not operating in compliance with prescribed mining and environmental standards, and the use of explosives resulted in stone fragments falling on nearby houses, the SDO further said.
On Oct 25, a massive explosion at Islam’s quarry in Belpahari Mouza reportedly damaged the roofs and walls of several nearby houses. Following the incident, villagers halted the excavation and dispatch of stone materials, demanding compensation and a joint settlement meeting with the leader.
However, Azhar allegedly resumed operations next day without addressing the villagers’ concerns, thereby infuriating them. They gathered at the Belpahari crusher unit to protest, which led to a confrontation that escalated into stone pelting and physical clashes.
Azhar’s private security guards allegedly opened fire amidst the chaos.
"Both sides have lodged the FIR, and police are investigating the matter," the SDO stated. Azhar, who fought on Ajsu-P candidate from Pakur constituency in the last state assembly election, termed the administrative action as politically motivated. He claimed on his social media platforms that the units were being operated in compliance with the set norms.
