Shillong: CM Conrad K Sangma announced that 15% of Meghalaya’s annual budget is dedicated to the education sector, totalling Rs 3,654 crore, marking it as the highest allocation among all state departments.Speaking at the closing ceremony of the silver jubilee celebration of St Anthony’s School in Pynursla, East Khasi Hills, Sangma highlighted the state’s commitment to education, noting that Meghalaya supports over 14,000 schools with 55,000 teachers.“Nearly Rs 1,000 crore is spent annually on grants to private, ad hoc, and deficit schools. We are proud of this investment. Because of it, our education system has grown and evolved, even though we still face challenges such as high dropout rates and low pass percentages,” he said.The CM also announced financial support for private schools, with the govt providing between Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore to selected schools for upgrading higher secondary sections.
