Itanagar: A warden of a boys’ hostel at a private school in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district has been arrested for sexually assaulting underage male students, police said on Wednesday.
The accused was taken into custody after three students, from Classes I, VI and VIII, came forward with complaints, a police officer said.
“The investigation is underway. So far, three students have come forward and accused the warden in the FIR,” he said, adding that more disclosures could emerge as the inquiry progresses.
Police said the case came to light after one of the students complained of pain while using the restroom and was sent home for medical attention.
Doctors at the hospital suspected sexual abuse, following which the matter was reported to police.
The private school authorities have denied prior knowledge of the alleged abuse. The principal said the accused appeared to be a disciplined and religious staff member.
“I never imagined he would commit such an act. The school will fully cooperate with the investigation and ensure such incidents do not occur again,” she said.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage among parents and the local community, with many demanding strict action against the accused and stronger child safety mechanisms in residential schools.
Police are recording statements from students, parents, hostel staff and school authorities as part of the ongoing probe.
