Meet a Ranchi school teacher who runs free ambulance for the needy
Ranchi: Amrendra Singh, a teacher at DPS Ranchi, has been quietly serving the society by running a free ambulance service for needy patients of the city. The Harmu resident, who often drives the patients to hospitals himself, also offers oxygen cylinders and concentrators for free to patients and their kin in times of crisis.
“During the Covid-19 crisis, I had first rolled out free ambulance service given the kind of crisis that existed everywhere including Ranchi. After that as the pandemic faded out, I stopped the service as calls too stopped coming. However, last October on Gandhi Jayanti, I once again decided to resume the free ambulance service,” he told TOI.
To avail the service, one can call on 9708531795 / 7322000095. “On an average, one or two calls flow in every two three days. Those who are aware about it approach me for helping someone or other,” he said, adding that on days when he is free, he drives patients to the health centre. “When I am busy with work, I have a driver who takes the patient,” stressed Singh. His ambulance is equipped with basis life support system, which often proved to be the difference between life and death of several patients he ferried to hospitals.
When asked how he funds the free service, Singh said, “My wife too is a Maths teacher in another reputed English medium school in Ranchi and both of us earn well to lead a good life. Hence, I could manage whatever little expenses (fuel cost) required to ferry patients, from my own pocket.”
Rakesh Sinha, a resident of Harmu, who once availed the ambulance for a friend said, “One of my friends had met with an accident near Birsa Chowk a couple of months back in the night. A local resident then informed me about this person (Singh), whom we contacted for help for taking to a nearby hospital.”
