108 ambulance service, Rims emergency report rise in accidents on NY’s Eve
Ranchi: The state govt-run 108 ambulance service and Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), the largest state-run medical college hospital in Jharkhand, reported a rise in road accident cases on New Year’s Eve this year.
The 108-ambulance service received 345 calls which reported road accidents across the state, including drunk and rash driving, on New Year’s Eve. Its control room received 12,567 calls throughout Wednesday for various health emergencies. However, no death was reported, officials said.
Sumit Basu, the president of Samman Foundation, which manages the operations of ambulance service, said, “Among the total calls received, 1,356 were service calls, meaning that those many people who availed the ambulance service on the day. They were either transferred from one hospital to another or taken to hospitals from their locations.”
“Road accident cases were reported due to various reasons including drunk and rash driving, accidents caused by speeding vehicles among others. However, no deaths were reported to us,” he said. Basu said though they do not have 2024 data, accident cases reported a sharp rise than usual. “On average, we get 175 calls reporting road accident cases every day,” he said.
Rajendra Institute of Medical Science’s trauma and emergency centre attended 62 emergency cases in the past 24 hours. “Among the cases, mostly were road accident cases, caused due to drunk and rash driving. The number of cases is at least 10% higher than what reported last year,” Dr Pradip Kumar Bhattacharya, in-charge of the trauma and emergency services at Rims, said on Thursday.
