Raipur: In an idea possibly borrowed from a Bollywood rom-com script, a young man turned to theft, not for money, but to win over the girl he loved.
However, it did not end well as 24-year-old Rishi Shukla landed up in police custody within 24 hours of stealing a Royal Enfield Bullet, which he hoped would impress his girlfriend.
Police said the youth, a dholak (a two-headed Indian hand drum) player who performs at temples with his father, teamed up with a friend to lift a parked Bullet from outside a house in Kamal Vihar in Raipur on Sunday.
However, his luck ran out as he fell into the police dragnet within 24 hours of the crime being reported.
He was arrested on Monday, the police said, adding that he wasn't skilled at breaking a bike lock and had turned to online tutorials to carry out the theft.
He skilled himself at picking a bike lock by browsing YouTube videos, the sleuths revealed, adding that the accused said he was in love with a young woman and wanted to take her out for a ride on an expensive motorcycle, like "lovers usually do".
However, unable to afford one, he decided to steal the Bullet to fulfil his wish.
Setting out on their plan to pinch an expensive two-wheeler, the youth and friend saw the Bullet parked outside the house and made off with it.
"He wasn't after money, but only wanted to impress his girlfriend," an officer said, adding that the plan unravelled quickly as police tracked down the accused and recovered the stolen motorbike within a day.
