Railways plans major infra expansion in Raipur to double train capacity by 2030
Raipur: As part of Indian Railways' plan to double train originating capacity by 2030, South East Central Railway has identified Raipur for major upgrades, including a new coaching terminal at Kendri, Nava Raipur. The move will ease congestion, enable new services, and strengthen connectivity on the Bilaspur–Nagpur section, benefiting passengers and the state's economy. In a major boost to rail infrastructure in Chhattisgarh, the Indian Railways decided to expand coaching terminals in key cities to meet rising passenger demand and ease congestion, with Raipur identified as a primary hub under the South East Central Railway (SECR).Raipur, located on the crucial Bilaspur–Nagpur section, is one of the busiest passenger and operational hubs in the SECR zone. The station currently handles around 122 coaching trains daily, including 76 mail and express services and 46 passenger trains. Despite having seven platforms, capacity constraints have meant that as many as 14 trains originating from Raipur are currently operated via Durg.To address this bottleneck and pave the way for new train services, SECR proposed a new coaching terminal at Kendri in Nava Raipur. The planned terminal is designed to significantly augment operational capacity and decongest Raipur Junction. According to railway officials, the proposed facility will have nine platforms—one home platform and four island platforms—along with five pit lines and five stabling lines. The terminal will also include four intermediate overhauling lines, four mechanical lines, and three shunting necks, enabling efficient maintenance and smoother train movements.Simultaneously, capacity enhancement works are progressing on the Bilaspur–Nagpur section, which is vital for Chhattisgarh's passenger and freight traffic. Construction of a fourth rail line is underway in the Raipur region to make operations faster and more reliable. Automatic signalling systems are also being installed to improve safety, punctuality, and line capacity. In another key development, a double rail line between Kharsia and Parmalkasa is being constructed. This line will pass through Nava Raipur, further strengthening sectional capacity and improving connectivity for the capital region and adjoining districts. High-speed rail infrastructure is also being strengthened. Meanwhile, Raipur Junction is undergoing a comprehensive redevelopment at a cost of Rs 456 crore. The project focuses on upgrading passenger amenities, modernising station buildings, improving circulation areas, and managing passenger flow more efficiently.Welcoming the decision, CM Vishnu Deo Sai said "Doubling capacity will mean more trains, better frequency, and reduced crowding. It will also give new momentum to connectivity, trade, industry, and tourism in Chhattisgarh."According to the Railways, capacity doubling by 2030 will involve the construction of additional platforms, pit lines, and stabling lines; development of new terminals in urban and peripheral areas; signalling upgrades, yard modernisation, and multi-tracking; and the establishment of mega coaching complexes and modern maintenance facilities.Railway infrastructure projects worth nearly Rs 41,000 crore are currently underway in Chhattisgarh, including line doubling, new corridors, flyovers, and bridges.
