BILASPUR: Daru and murga (liquor and chicken) are the two things that are a must in most places during election. However, Satinara village in district Korea in north Chhattisgarh is a proverbial exception to the rule. The tribal village near district headquarters Baikunthpur, about 220km from here, has been following a tacit tradition of keeping away from liquor and chicken on any polling day.
Besides, every adult casts his or her vote without fail.
Consumption and brewing of country made liquor is a common practice in Satinara. The village is made up of 23 houses and families of Cherwa, Kanwar and Gond tribes. A few years ago, an old man of the village, Mangal Singh, managed to persuade villagers to keep away from liquor and chicken on polling day of any election and to cast their votes. Since then, the tradition continues. In fact, their resolve is so strong now that they observed it even on Sunday, which was the polling day for nearby Baikunthpur and Churcha municipal corporation, despite the fact the village does not come under municipal limits of Baikunthpur.
And like any other small village, Satinara also has its share of problems- absence of proper road and drinking water. Villagers say there is only one hand pump for the whole village, which is insufficient for their needs.
