Raipur: Facing a must-win situation to keep their knockout hopes alive, Chhattisgarh produced a disciplined and incisive bowling performance to restrict Delhi to a modest total on the opening day of their
Ranji Trophy Elite Group match at the BCCI Centre of Excellence ground in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
Asked to bowl first after losing the toss, Chhattisgarh's bowlers laid the foundation with a sustained and controlled effort, dismissing Delhi for 216 in 67.5 overs.
Delhi were rocked early, slipping to 33 for four, as Chhattisgarh's seamers struck regularly. Pacer bowler Dev Aditya Singh led the attack with three wickets, while Sahban Khan matched him with three of his own, using disciplined lines to exploit Delhi's tentative footwork. Ravi Kiran was once again effective in containing runs, conceding just 30 in his 16 overs, while Ashish Chouhan chipped in with a key breakthrough.
Delhi found stability only through Ayush Doseja, who compiled a resolute 104 off 171 balls (not-out), anchoring the innings amid a procession of wickets at the other end. Doseja's 97-run stand with Money Grewal (35) lifted Delhi past the 200-run mark, but Chhattisgarh ensured there was no late surge that could swing momentum decisively.
In reply, Chhattisgarh ended the day in a position of relative comfort at 52 without loss in 17 overs, showing the calm approach demanded by the situation. Openers Ayush Pandey (29 not out) and A G Tiwary (21 not out) negotiated the final session without alarm, seeing off Delhi's bowlers and preserving all ten wickets for the second day.
While Chhattisgarh still trail by 164 runs, the unbeaten opening stand has given them a solid platform in a match where first-innings parity—or better—could prove crucial in the context of qualification. With plenty of batting to come, the side will look to build steadily and convert the advantage created by their bowlers. As the match heads into the crucial middle days, Chhattisgarh have firmly set the tone—aware that only a strong, result-oriented performance will keep their Ranji Trophy campaign on track.
