RAIPUR: Security has been tightened around BJP’s Bijapur MLA, Mahesh Ghagra, following an anonymous “death threat” received by him over the phone last week.
Ghagra, who was elected from Bijapur in 2008 and 2013, had reportedly received the threatening call on his cell phone on May 26, while he was on his way to Delhi for attending the swearing in of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
The caller, who called from an unknown mobile number, threatened to “kill” the MLA.
A complaint was lodged with the police after Ghagra returned from Delhi. Efforts are on by the police to trace the number from which the call was made.
According to police officials while the personal security of the two times MLA remains the same, patrolling has been increased around his house and his family members have been provided a cover. Officials were tight lipped about the investigations but if insiders are to be believed, no headway has been made so far.
Talking to TOI, Bijapur SP, Prashant Agarwal, said efforts were on to trace the mobile phone and the location from where the call was made. While police are exploring “all angles”, including personal enmity and Maoists threat, they do not also rule out the possibilities of the call being a prank.
“We are taking no chances,” said a senior official while claiming that the security personnel around the MLA and his family members have been alerted and directed to remain “extra vigilant”. Patrolling has also been increased around the MLA’s house and the venues of his public appearances.
Meanwhile according to reports, home minister, Ramsevak Paikra, has also assured the MLA of additional security, even though he claimed that no written complaint has been received about the threat.
