Balod police add feather to cap, selected for IACP Award

RAIPUR: In a major achievement,

Chhattisgarh

's Balod district has been shortlisted from the country for an international award by

International Association of Chief of Police

(

IACP

) for its unique initiative on community policing. The award will be conferred in San Diego, California on October 15.

Getting into international spotlight, Balod district superintendent of police,

Arif Shaikh

would receive the award by IACP which is also called 'Oscar', biggest award in community policing. Shaikh would make presentation before international crowd about his initiative taken on community policing and how it became a success.

Balod district has also been recently selected by Security Watch India and would be awarded for excellence in policing at New Delhi on October 3 and Union minister of state for home affairs, Kiren Rijiju will give the award.

Chief minister Raman Singh on Thursday also tweeted about the achievement.

"The IACP has selected Balod police for the award for its excellent execution of e-Raksha, Purn Shakti and

Jeevdaya

under 'Navodaya' campaign. Congratulations to Balod police and SP Arif Shaikh for competing against 800 entries from 200 nations to get India's first award from 123-year-old institution in Virginia, USA."

When contacted, Balod SP Arif Shaikh said that more than 800 nominations were received from 200 progressive countries across the globe for the IACP award. Balod bagged the honour with its unique formula in community policing.

"We competed with New York police department, Bejing (China), Canada police who were winners in the past," he said.

IACP is a 123-year-old institution with its headquarters based in Virginia, USA and this institution has been giving awards at international level for best community policing practices for the past 18 years.

Police in the district has forged a vibrant partnership with the community at large, establishing backward and forward linkages. The community policing was started in November 2015 turned out to be a boon for locals.

Balod police have initialized three novel initiatives- Mission E-Raksha, Mission Jeev Daya and Mission Purnashakti.

"Police cannot effectively deal with all crimes in society. Community policing emphasizes on prevention, early identification, and timely intervention to deal with issues. Community policing is a value system which permeates a police department, in which the primary organisational goal is working cooperatively with individual citizens, groups of citizens, and both the public and private organizations to identify and resolve issues which potentially affect the common man and society," said Shaikh.

Chief minister Raman Singh and DGP AN Upadhyay congratulated Balod police and Durg range IG Dipanshu Kabra on the achievement.
