Raipur: The team at AIIMS Raipur reimplanted the amputated hand of a 70-year-old man after an industrial accident. The patient lost his left forearm when it got caught in a paddy husk machine and was brought to the hospital within two hours, with the severed limb preserved in an ice-lined container.
After initial stabilisation, he underwent an emergency surgery that lasted around eight hours. The procedure involved repairing multiple damaged tissues. The orthopaedic team carried out bone shortening and fixation, while anaesthetists managed the patient's condition during surgery.
After a month in hospital, the hand has shown good blood flow and the wounds have largely healed. Doctors said bone healing is expected over the next two months, while functional recovery will take longer and depend on rehabilitation.
Experts said timely arrival at hospital and proper preservation of the amputated limb are key factors in such cases, and can significantly improve the chances of successful reattachment.
