PUNE: A 17-year-old boy was detained and his accomplice arrested for trying to rob a passenger from Beed after he got off a private luxury bus near Gunjan talkies chowk on Thursday around 5pm.
The minor and his partner Abhijeet Hanumant Kamble (19) are residents of Yashwantnagar in Yerawada.
Senior inspector Sanjay Patil in-charge of the Yerawada police station said on Friday, "The boy snatched a cloth bag and cellphone from 19-year-old Suraj Shivling Kale (19) from Mazalgaon in Beed district after he and his friend got off a bus.
As soon as Kale raised an alarm, three autorickshaw drivers standing nearby overpowered the boy after a brief chase."
A police patrol rushed to the spot and took the boy into custody.
"Kamble fearing arrest escaped from the spot. During interrogation, the minor confessed to his involvement in the robbery bid and revealed Kamble's name for abetting him in the crime. Police launched a hunt for Kamble and took him into custody from his hideout on the same day," he said.
The duo does not have any criminal antecedents. They decided to rob to make some quick cash. They are illiterate and unemployed, Patil added.
Kale has registered a complaint against the youths with the Yerawada police under sections 393 (robbery bid) read with 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
The autorickshaw drivers will be feted for helping the police in nabbing the boy.
