PUNE: Several programmes on social and political leader Gopal Krishna Gokhale will be held across the country to mark his death centenary year.
The first programme in this series of events will be held at Fergusson college in the presence of governor K Sankaranarayan on February 19, when the centenary year starts. On the same day, there will be a programme in Nashik at the Gokhale Education Society.

Addressing a news conference here on Thursday to share details of the centenary year programmes, Sunil Gokhale, great grandson of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, said, "Gopal Krishna Gokhale made a vital contribution in the field of social reforms as well as in fields of politics and education. He was associated with many social organizations. There will be an attempt to spread Gokhale's thoughts in the society over the next one year. Organizations that were associated with Gokhale will hold programmes like seminars, lectures and discussions. Besides, there are plans to hold long-term activities that will begin this year, but will go on for a longer period."
Gokhale said, "Many institutions were established in Gopal Krishna Gokhale's name. He was associated with many institutions. There is a plan to bring all such institutions in the loop. Gokhale had visited many places across the country. He had traveled to Pakistan, UK, South Africa and Bangladesh. Steps are being taken to hold programmes at these places over the next one year. There is a plan to compile Gokhale's writings and speeches, and present the same at venues where programmes will be held for the general public."
Gokhale highlighted a plan to establish a museum at Gopal Krishna Gokhale's residence in Pune which will showcase various things used by him. The museum will also display his life in the form of pictures, he said.
