Three arrested for betting

The crime branch on Friday arrested three persons in simultaneous raids at Pimpri and Khadki for their involvement in a betting racket during the World Cup cricket final match between India and Sri Lanka.

PUNE: The crime branch on Friday arrested three persons in simultaneous raids at Pimpri and Khadki for their involvement in a betting racket during the World Cup cricket final match between India and Sri Lanka.
The police seized four cell phones and cash totalling to Rs 20,000 during the two raids. The police have identified the suspects as Naresh Mata (33) of Main bazar, Pimpri, Zoab Gafoor Khan (27) and Nilesh Vishnu Thakar (23) both of Juna Bazar, Khadki.
Acting on a tip-off, police teams led by inspector Sunil Tambe of the anti-terrorism squad (ATS) and Sunil Pawar (unit-IV) of the Pune crime branch conducted raids and arrested the suspects.

Bets were allegedly placed on phone for each ball played and each over played in the match.
During this World Cup the crime branch of Pune conducted six raids in total and arrested 13 persons. On March 13, the crime branch arrested seven people from Pimpri and Kondhwa. On March 25, three persons were arrested in simultaneous raids at Bhavani Peth and Mangalwar Peth.
The investigating team comprised assistant commissioner of police (crime) Prabhakar Patil, police constables Sharad Jadhav, Sanjay Paigude, Sharad Dedge and Deepak Mate.
