Pune hospital launches dedicated Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) clinic to strengthen neurological care
PUNE: In a significant step towards strengthening specialised neurological care, Jupiter Hospital, Baner has announced the launch of a dedicated Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) Clinic, aimed at improving early diagnosis, timely treatment, and long-term rehabilitation for patients affected by the condition. The announcement was made during a media interaction addressed by the director of the Neurology Department, Dr Rajas Deshpande
Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a rare but serious autoimmune neurological disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves, often leading to rapidly progressive weakness, paralysis, and, in severe cases, breathing difficulties. Neurologists stress that early recognition and prompt treatment play a crucial role in reducing complications and improving recovery outcomes.
Addressing the media, Dr Rajas Deshpande, Director, Neurology at Jupiter Hospital, said the new clinic fills a critical gap in structured GBS care. “GBS can progress rapidly, and even a short delay in diagnosis can significantly impact outcomes. By setting up a dedicated clinic, we are creating a streamlined pathway for early identification, immediate intervention, and close monitoring of patients by multiple specialties,” he explained.
Dr Shivraj Hunge, Director, Neurology, Jupiter Hospital, highlighted the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. “GBS management does not end with acute treatment. Many patients require intensive care support, respiratory monitoring, immunotherapy, and sustained rehabilitation. This clinic brings together neurologists, critical care specialists, physiotherapists, and rehabilitation teams to provide end-to-end, coordinated care,” he said.
Adding to this, Dr. Rajendra Patankar, Chief Executive Officer, Jupiter Hospital emphasised the broader impact of the initiative on patient outcomes. “A dedicated GBS clinic allows for standardised protocols, faster decision-making, and seamless coordination across departments. This integrated model of care is crucial in neurological emergencies like GBS, where timely intervention can be life-saving and recovery-defining,” he noted.
The dedicated GBS Clinic is supported by a GBS-ready ICU, advanced diagnostic services, multidisciplinary critical care, and comprehensive rehabilitation facilities. The centre also focuses on patient and caregiver education, helping families recognise early symptoms such as limb weakness, tingling sensations, and difficulty walking, enabling faster medical intervention. Long-term care plan and psychological support for every patient is ensured by the team.
With this initiative, Jupiter Hospital reaffirms its commitment to accessible, patient-first neurological care. The launch marks an important milestone in the hospital’s efforts to address complex neurological disorders through specialised infrastructure, clinical expertise, and integrated care pathways, ultimately aiming to improve patient outcomes and quality of life across Pune and Maharashtra.
