PUNE: A team from cyber crime police on Wednesday busted a fake call centre in Camp and arrested 2 persons for allegedly duping Americans posing as officials from the US Social Security Administration and threatening the victims that their Social Security Number was being misused.
Priam facie probe revealed that the suspects duped thousands of US residents injecting their mind the fear that their social security number was being misused for drugs trafficking.
The police have seized three cellphones, 10 hard discs, three routers, eight headphones from the call centre located at a commercial establishment in Camp.
The cyber crime police team led by senior inspector Jayram Paigude raided the fake call centre and arrested
Aquib Shaikh (27) of Kondhwa and Sarim Shaikh (29) of Bhimpura, Camp. “We also seized 30 screen shots of pages containing data of US citizens,” Paigude told TOI.
Paigude said that Aquib Shaikh and Sarim Shaikh had started the call centre in Camp area about two months ago. They had appointed about eight people to work in the call centre. “Before that the duo had worked in the different cities in the country and were duping the people by using the same modus,” Paigude said.
He said that the police are in the process of assessing the overall quantam of money made by the duo and also the numbers of victims in the US. “Our probe is on,” Paigude said.
