PMC likely to get defence land
PUNE: Proposals for handing over certain patches of land owned by the defence estates office (DEO) in Pune which have been sought for road-widening by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) under the Pune Road Development Project are in the final stage of study and will soon be forwarded to the ministry of defence (MoD) for formal sanction.
The PMC has already presented a proposal for taking over defence land on six roads at the Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB) area.

Brigadier R.J. Sharma, sub-area commander of the Indian Army’s Pune region, said on Tuesday that the process would involve transfer of around 20 acres of defence land near six major roads in Khadki. "The PMC has also expressed interest in widening two roads in the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) area but no formal proposals have been received by us so far," he told TOI on Tuesday.
In Khadki, portions of the Alandi road, the Airport road and Anderson road are among those proposed to be officially transferred to the PMC. "The PMC was willing to give us advance payment for the transfer but we thought it prudent to wait till receiving official sanction from the MoD. The land has been priced according to defence ministry rates but at the moment I am not in a position to quote a specific figure," said Sharma.
Regarding Pune Camp, Sharma said that certain parts on the Pune-Solapur road and the Lullanagar-Bibwewadi road were jointly surveyed by defence and PMC officials some time ago. "However, unlike in Khadki, no proposals have been officially forwarded by the PMC to us regarding the two roads in the PCB zone," Sharma said.
During a recent visit to the city, minister of state for defence M.M. Pallam Raju had advocated handing over of defence land wherever local civic bodies were willing to undertake road-widening and other development works. "The minister’s assertions had signalled the government’s in-principle approval of the project. What we now require is formal approval from the Southern Command after which the proposals will be submitted to the MoD," said the sub-area commander.
Reiterating the commitment of the defence ministry and the services to be partners in the growth and development of the city, Sharma expressed confidence that all land transfers and road-widening would be completed before the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Pune.
