Pimpri Chinchwad: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) officials started repairing open distribution point boxes in Dapodi on Thursday after four-year-old Anushka Kale suffered burn injuries when she came in contact with an open DP box a fortnight ago.
A senior MSEDCL official said there are lakhs of DP boxes in Pimpri division and the staff had been instructed to repair DP boxes through contractors if there were complaints about missing covers.
The contractors had re-installed covers on 137 DP boxes in the past month.
The electrical inspector who visited the spot on Thursday said compensation will be provided to the family as per the rules considering the severity of the injury.
Anushka's mother Monica Kale, a daily wage worker, said, "Anushka accidentally touched the open DP box. We took her to Aundh General Hospital for treatment and she was discharged after a few days. The girl has been experiencing pain due to the wound."
Social worker Satish Kambiye said Anushka's right hand touched the open DP box causing a loud explosion and she was hurled into the air. "She fell unconscious a little distance away. A burning wire from the DP box singed both her thighs," he added.
Kambiye blamed the power utility for negligence. "Many times, the covers of DP boxes are stolen by miscreants, but MSEDCL must reinstall them immediately. If there is a delay, then mishaps like Anushka's burn accident can occur. The MSEDCL must give compensation to the family as they are poor and cannot afford to give her good treatment."
