PUNE: Notorious gangster Sharad Mohol and his aide Akshay Bhalerao were booked on Thursday and two others arrested under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for trying to extort Rs 3 lakh from a laundry owner on the premises of the district and sessions court in Shivajinagar on March 30.
The Khadak police got the custody of Sushil Mandal (23) of Bhavani Peth and Sachin alias Gotya Shilimkar (24) of Lohiyanagar from the Yerawada Central Prison on Friday.
A special court has sent the duo in police custody remand till May 25.
The complainant, Yogesh Sahadeo Parade (32) runs a laundry business in Guruwar Peth. On March 30, Bhalerao and Mandal asked him to meet Mohol in court. Mohol threatened Parade and told him that his aides would come to him for money.
On the night of March 31, Mohol’s aides went to Parade's laundry and demanded Rs 3 lakh. Parade then lodged the police complaint against Mohol and his aides.
A police team laid a trap and nabbed Bhalerao, Mandal and Shilimkar from Shankarsheth Road on April 14.
The trio during interrogation admitted to their involvement in the extortion attempt. Bhalerao went absconding after he was released on bail. Mandal and Shilimkar were sent in magisterial custody at the Yerawada prison.
The MCOCA was invoked against Mohol and others after obtaining sanction from the additional commissioner
of police Prakash Mutyal (north region). Assistant commissioner of police (city division) Arvind Patil under the guidance of deputy commissioner of police Mahadev Tambade (Zone I) has initiated the process of seeking the custody of Mohol from Taloja jail.
Sharad Mohol and his aide Alok Bhalerao in June 2012 murdered alleged Indian Mujahideen operative Qateel Siddiqui in the Yerawada Central Prison.
