Kalyani School joins ‘Kids for Tigers’ initiative

Pune: The Kalyani School in Pune joined the Kids for Tigers programme amidst well-known environmental activism on July 23, a statement from the school said.

The event was attended by Deepak Dalal, Bittu Sahgal, Parvesh Pandya, Bikram Grewal and Madhu Bhatnagar.

Sahgal, a renowned wildlife enthusiast and environmental activist, founded Kids for Tigers, an educational outreach programme in 2002.

The programme was started to facilitate nature walks, festivals and workshops for rural and urban kids of India. From New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru, the Kids for Tigers branched out into more towns and cities, reaching out to over one million children.

Dalal, a children’s storywriter, nature lover and outdoorsman, was the chief guest. He addressed the audience, highlighting the importance of how schools with the help of teachers and students can bring about change. He read out an excerpt from Greta Thurnberg’s revolutionary speech seeking immediate action to combat climate change.

It was followed by an audiovisual presentation by Pandya and Sahgal about listening to nature.

Grewal’s presentation was based on the varied bird and animal species of India. He also showcased the work environmental activists in Nagaland struggling to prevent the hunting of Amur Falcon, a migratory bird.

Bhatnagar, who is a resource person for environmental education, said environmental concerns must be addressed.
