PUNE: A hostel manager was arrested on Thursday night for allegedly molesting a 19-year-old girl, alone in her room.
Dinesh Kasat (47) was arrested after the B.Com second-year student registered a complaint against him.
The girl has been staying in the hostel for the last 18 months.
On Thursday, she returned to the hostel at Ganjwe Chowk on Shastri Road around 11.30am after attending classes.
She locked her door and went off to sleep. She woke up when she heard someone knocking on her door. On opening it, she found Kasat outside. He told her to turn off the water tap.
Police said Kasat grabbed her and refused to let her go despite her protests. Only when she elbowed him did he release her.
Senior inspector Hemant Bhat in-charge of the Vishrambaug police station said that on Friday, the girl informed her roommates about the incident, following which they decided to register a complaint against Kasat under sections 354 (molestation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of Indian Penal Code. Kasat was immediately arrested.
Sub-inspector Vaishali Adkur, who is investigating the case, said, "Around eight girls from the hostel have also complained about Kasat's indecent behavior, but he hasn't touched them. We are in the process of recording their statements."
Kasat was presented before a magisterial court for seeking police custody remand. "The court rejected our plea on the grounds that he was arrested in a bailable offence. He was later released on bail," she added.
