Edu dept releases norms for direct entry to polytechnics

Pune: Students who have opted for vocational subjects in Standard XII will be able to directly take admission to the second year in polytechnic colleges, the state technical education department has clarified in a notification. The department has also relaxed the requirement that students take Standard XII exams in math or biology, in addition to physics and chemistry. Instead, they can now choose any three vocational subjects and get direct second-year entry into a polytechnic course.

Acting director of technical education, Vinod Mohitkar, told TOI, “As per the concession given by the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), admission will be given to students who have passed Std XII exams with any three vocational subjects chosen that year. Although this decision is old, the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) passed it on for this year, 2022-23, and 2023-24, so vocationally qualified pupils can benefit.”Biotechnology, IT, agriculture, engineering graphics, business studies, and entrepreneurship are among the few optional subjects in vocational education to choose from. Students who opt for the minimum competency vocational course for Std XII are eligible for polytechnic as well as Industrial Training Institute (ITI) courses.If a student exits after successfully completing second year, they will be provided with a skill certificate as per the state technical board-set level.Mohitkar added, “This relaxation is being granted because students who are already pursuing the Minimum Competency Vocational Courses (MCVC) courses shall stand deprived.”
