PUNE: Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan said on Friday that government agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) were being misused by the BJP leadership to silence voices of dissent.
Opposition leaders are being denied opportunities to express their views in parliament, the former chief minister said at a press conference in the city. "The way actions are being taken against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is not correct. There is no defamation case in this matter. The democracy is under threat by such wrong action," he said.
Chavan said that an old case has been used to frame Gandhi and disqualify him from the membership of Lok Sabha. "The criminal defamation case cannot stand as Gandhi did not defame anybody. On the other hand, he asked questions about those people who have been declared absconding by the government," he said.
"Ideally, rulers should answer the questions that opposition parties ask. It is the job of the opposition to raise issues of public importance. But the government is not ready to face tough questions. They are trying to shift the focus from real issues by creating controversies related to Savarkar and OBCs," Chavan added.
"An in-depth inquiry should be carried out in allegations made by the US-based research firm on Adani group. PM Narendra Modi should share the details about his association with the head of this group," he said, adding that allegations of misusing foreign funds and money laundering should also be probed.
