3 youths held for stealing motorcycles to take girlfriends on long rides

Pune: Three youths involved in stealing motorcycles for taking their girlfriends on long rides were arrested on Sunday and 14 stolen two-wheelers worth Rs6 lakh were recovered from them.

A Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch team led by senior inspector Vivek Mugalikar took the trio — Himanshu Solanki (20), Nikhil Jadhav (19) and Ashish Jadhav (21), all from Dighi — into custody from Somatane Phata near Talegaon.

Mugalikar said constables Farukh Mulla and Dhananjay Bhosale had received a tip-off about the three youths coming to Somatane Phata on a stolen two-wheeler. “We laid a trap. The trio accelerated after seeing the police team, but we nabbed them after a brief chase,” he said.

He said the trio admitted during the questioning that they had stolen the two-wheeler from Talegaon Dabhade. “A case in this regard was registered with the Talegaon Dabhade police,” Mugalikar said.

The trio revealed during the sustained questioning that they had stolen 14 motorcycles from Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad in the past few months. “Himanshu, Nikhil and Ashish are college dropouts. They did not have two-wheelers to take their girlfriends on long rides. So, they started stealing motorcycles. They had stolen the two-wheelers from Bhosari, Dighi, Wakad, Hadapsar and Peth areas in the city,” Mugalikar said.

He said the trio had parked the stolen motorcycles at different places in Dighi. “We have recovered 14 vehicles and detected 12 cases,” Mugalikar said.
