10-year target to be carbon neutral
Pune: A think tank which works on reversing the impact of climate change, Pune Climate Collective (CLiC), has outlined goals to ensure that the city becomes carbon neutral over the next ten years.
A document — Making Pune Metropolitan Region Carbon Neutral by 2030 — released by CLiC recently has outlined the ways to ensure maximum carbon sequestration in the Pune Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (PMRDA) region.
Aditi Kale, a coordinator at the CLiC, said, “We have been preparing this report for the last one year. We came out with the document to make the PMRDA region carbon neutral by 2030”.
Whatever you’re emitting is compensated by the sequestration, that is, storage or the carbon sinks, Kale said. “Right now, about 97% of the emissions are not getting sequestered”, she said.
The document proposed a two-way action plan. “We would focus on emission reduction and carbon sequestration. We need to ensure proper emission reduction with a 70% cut on emissions. Our sequestration capacity is thrice of what it is right now. So, with this we could reduce the emission gap significantly”, she said.
