Cops thwart self-immolation bid of woman at collectorate

VELLORE

: Threatened by two people to vacate her ancestral house, a 29-year-old mother of four attempted

self-immolation

at the

collectorate

on Monday.

District officials who pacified the

woman

saying they would take appropriate action against the two culprits, later sent her to her hometown.

Police identified the woman as Shyamala, wife of electrician Gajendran and a native of Sitrampettai near K V Kuppam.

Alerted by public, women police personnel deployed near the collectorate thwarted Shymala’s suicide

attempt

and produced her before district revenue officer J Partheeban.

Speaking to TOI, Shyamala said she married Gajendran of K V Kuppam five years ago and has

four children

– Naveen, 4, Srilakshmi, 2, and twin daughters who were born four months back.

Gajendran, who allegedly had an extramarital affair, had eloped with the woman two months back. Abandoned by her husband, Shyamala was living with her mother Kala, a sexagenarian, and her sister Vennila, 27, at their home in Sitrampettai.

Her neighbours Sekar and Indran, who wanted to grab their house, had been threatening the three women for the past two months to vacate the house, saying that otherwise they will face dire consequences.

“Though we had given several complaints at the K V Kuppam police station, no action has been taken against the two accused. As we fear that they will not hesitate to go to any extent to vacate us from the house, I attempted suicide,” Shyamala said.

Partheeban, who pacified the family members who had come to the collectorate with the four children, directed the K V Kuppam police to conduct an inquiry and take appropriate action against the two neighbours.
