The 40-year-old Pramila Sharma saw to it that her husband, Umesh Sharma (50), earned his own livelihood and never felt depressed. Umesh used to work in a private company in Delhi but had to quit his job and return to Patna after his leg became defunct following a medicine reaction.
“I was left with no option but to stay at home cursing my luck and God and helplessly seeing my wife working day and night to earn money for the family,” recalled Umesh. But Pramila helped him set up a tea stall at Boring Road where he sells tea, biscuits and sweets the whole day. She drops him on his wheelchair at the shop every morning and helps him wrap up the makeshift stall and return home at night.
“We salute her courage that she took her husband out from the clutches of despair,” said Madhu Shrivastav, vice-president of Lion’s Club of Patna Femina which honoured Pramila for her courage and devotion towards her husband on Friday, on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
ADRI: Asian Development Research Institute (ADRI) and Institute of Human Rights Education jointly organized a workshop on the occasion. Professor P P Ghosh said though the growth rate of Bihar has increased, there was no substantial change in the condition of women. Women’s Development Corporation (WDC), Bihar, celebrated the day with a street play ‘Chand Ke Paar Chalo’.
