Police said the dispute had its origins in a wedding procession on Sunday, when some youths allegedly arrived intoxicated at an orchestra performance and were accused of harassing women, triggering a scuffle. Tensions resurfaced on Tuesday and flared up again on Wednesday following fresh allegations of assault.
Members of one group claimed that the situation had calmed down, but violence re-erupted after a man from their community was allegedly assaulted while passing through the other group’s locality on Wednesday morning.
Barharia SHO Chhotan Kumar said, “There is an ongoing dispute between both groups in the village, and the incident is part of that chain. Currently, the situation is under control and, as a precautionary measure, five people from both groups have been taken into custody. Police force has been deployed in the village, and the situation is being monitored.”
