hazaribagh: an unprecedented scene was enacted in the meeting of the syndicate of hazaribagh-headquartered vinoba bhave university on monday when the participating syndics rose to their feet one after another hurling charges of gross inefficiency and ineffectiveness on the part of the university vice chancellor nirmal kumar chatterjee. the sore members pointed out that the meeting was called after a long gap of six months.
they were also angry over the fact that the agenda of the meeting was not made available to them in time as per rules. the rules provide that the agenda should be circulated among all the members at least seven days before the meeting. the members further alleged that the decisions taken at the syndicate meeting in the past were never implemented and it appeared that the syndicate had become virtually non-functional. among those who were vocal on these issues were arjun yadav of rjd, principal o p sharma, principal rekha rani, j l oraon, principal purnendu shekhar, r s ambastha and principal n k p sinha. the vc requested the members to let the meeting continue specially in view of the scheduled visit of an inspection team of the association of indian universities, new delhi to hazaribagh on april 16 and 17 for which preparations had to be made by the syndicate. but the vc's request failed to pacify the members who submitted a written protest, alleging gross inefficiency on the part of the vc and walked out of the meeting. it may be recalled that such an ugly situation had never been witnessed in the annals of vinoba bhave university and in no other university of the state, members of the highest executive body of the university have boycotted the meeting as a mark of protest against the conduct of the vc in recent times. admn gears up for ramnavami: all arrangements for peaceful celebration of ramnavami festival at hazaribagh, which is to commence on april 12 and end on april 15, have been completed and security beefed up to prevent any untoward incident, said hazaribagh superintendent of police, aloke raj on monday. the sp said that altogether 422 police officers, 2,500 policemen and 1,000 lathi-wielding force have been deployed in various parts of the district for maintaining law and order situation. he said that 20 lady constables, six dsps, seven teargas sections, 25 extra wireless sets and one platoon of mounted police besides 700 homeguards have also been requisitioned for the purpose. the sp said that special steps have been taken this year, particularly in view of the forthcoming muharram festival of the muslim community the date of which is coinciding with that of ramnavami. already, 235 persons have been rounded up in hazaribagh town alone under section 107 crpc while 932 persons have been rounded up in other parts of the district, he added. he said that a special drive has been launched against the manufacture of illicit liquor and a large number of ovens have been destroyed and more than 500 litres of illicit countrymade liquor seized. he said about two dozen anti-social elements have been arrested. in addition to this, the sp said the police have taken special measures to check forcible realisation of chanda for the ramnavami festival and ten persons of gowaltoli locality have been arrested in this connection. meanwhile, a meeting of the central peace committee was held under the presidentship of deputy commissioner deepak prasad. the dc announced at the meet that special arrangements have been made for uninterrupted power and water supply during ramnavami. he appealed to the people to maintain communal harmony and co-operate with the administration in ensuring peaceful passage of the festival.
