State set to get 185 MW solar energy from Kajra plant
Patna: Bihar will receive 185 MW solar energy cum 282 MWh of battery storage power from Kajra in Lakhisarai, state’s energy minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav said after Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) on Wednesday.
The Kajra project is the country’s largest battery-based power project. Calling it a historic day, Yadav said receiving power from Kajra is a significant achievement. Battery-based storage power will reduce carbon emissions.
In the first phase, work on 185 MW solar energy and 282 MWh battery storage capacity is in the final stages. The project was issued on a work order issued on July 1, 2024, and was successfully connected to the 132 kV grid on Dec 31, 2025. The second phase under construction will add 116 MW solar energy and 241 MWh battery capacity at a cost of Rs1,055 crore. By Jan 2027, Kajra plant’s total capacity will reach 301 MW solar energy and 523 MWh battery storage. This will not only strengthen energy supply but also maintain grid stability during peak demand.
The minister, who also released a booklet titled ‘The Power Year 2025 - Bihar Energy Highlights’ based on key achievements of 2025, said the state govt is making an investment of Rs50,000 crore in the solar energy sector.
“This project is not just about providing electricity, but is also an inspiration for green energy and the future,” the minister said and added that the power purchase agreement marks a significant achievement for Bihar in the direction of self-reliance in the energy sector.
Energy secretary and chairman-cum-MD of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL), Manoj Kumar Singh, said the path for commercial operation has been paved after signing the PPA.
He also said around 3,500 people, during the public hearing organised by the Bihar State Pollution Control Board for Pirpainti Thermal Power Plant, gave their consent for the plant’s construction.
MD of South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited and BSPGCL), Mahendra Kumar, said the signing of the PPA for Kajra Solar Power Project is not just a formal process, but a celebration of fulfilling a promise made to the people of Bihar.
Managing director of North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited, Rahul Kumar, along with other senior officials were present on the occasion.
