Patna: Three people died on the spot when a speeding car lost control and rammed into them while they were repairing a broken truck on the roadside in Munger district. The incident occurred near a fuel station pump under Mufassil police station area on Bariarpur-Munger main road on Tuesday afternoon.
The victims were identified as Mohammad Shahid alias Tinku, 45, a truck mechanic from Haji Subhan; Raja Mandal, 35, a resident of Naugarhi Kantpur in Mufassil area; and Mohammad Arman, 19, from Banaudha village.
According to eyewitnesses, the three men were busy repairing their truck on the roadside when the car suddenly veered out of control, crashing directly into them. The impact was so severe that the victims were thrown in different directions. One victim had a glass mirror pierced into his eye, while the others suffered massive head injuries and bruises. All three died on the spot.
After hitting the victims, the car travelled nearly 50 metres, overturned twice and came to a halt in a badly damaged condition. The driver, who was the sole occupant, fled after the accident.
The accident triggered massive outrage among local residents, who blocked the Bariarpur-Munger main road, causing a traffic jam.
Senior police officers, including Sadar DSP Abhishek Anand, Mufassil SHO Vipin Kumar Singh and New Ramnagar police station in charge Ravindra Kumar, along with a team led by Munger SP Syed Imran Masood, reached the spot to pacify the protesters and restore normalcy. The bodies were sent for the postmortem.
The SP told this reporter that police have initiated a search for the driver and were examining CCTV footage from nearby areas. “The accused has been identified and team is conducting raids to nab him. The vehicle has been impounded and an FIR has been registered. Further investigation is underway,” Masood said.
Meanwhile, CM Samrat Choudhary mourned the three deaths. He directed the disaster management department to provide an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to the dependants of all three deceased.
