Sonepur railway station to get airport-like makeover: DRM
Patna: Sonepur, globally renowned for hosting Asia’s famous cattle fair, is set for a major infrastructure boost as the railways undertakes redevelopment of Sonepur railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) at a total cost of over Rs 24 crore. The project aims to transform the station into a world-class passenger hub with airport-like facilities.Sonepur divisional railway manager Amit Saran said more than 50% of the physical work on the main station redevelopment has already been completed. The project focuses on modernisation, passenger convenience, improved aesthetics and enhanced operational efficiency, befitting Sonepur’s status as a major cultural and transport centre, he said.

He said the ongoing works under ABSS includes Rs 7.73 crore for the station façade building, Rs 14 crore for the construction of a foot over bridge (FOB) and Rs 2.68 crore for passenger amenities.In addition, the railways will develop a second station exit at a cost of over Rs 19 crore and carry out refurbishing of platforms numbered 3, 4 and 5 at a cost of Rs 1.45 crore. These works, amounting to Rs 21.43 crore, have been included in the next work plan under ABSS.
“Landscaping and painting works are currently underway, lending the station a modern and visually appealing look. The platform upgrades are aimed at improving safety, accessibility and overall passenger comfort,” the DRM said.He said the railways is providing world-class passenger amenities at a cost of Rs 2.68 crore. These include improved waiting halls, modern toilets, better lighting, digital information systems, enhanced seating arrangements and upgraded circulating areas to ensure a smooth and comfortable travel experience.A major highlight of the project is the construction of a separate foot over bridge with a width of 12 metres, which has now been completed. The wide FOB is expected to significantly ease passenger movement across platforms, reduce congestion and improve safety, especially during peak hours and festive seasons, he said.As Sonepur is the divisional headquarters of the East Central Railway, the station is being developed as the most modern station in the division. “Once completed, it will offer all requisite facilities in line with contemporary railway standards and serve as a model station under the ABSS,” the DRM said.
