Six named in FIR after three deaths in Nalanda

Patna: Police are yet to arrest the accused in the alleged poisoning of a 28-year-old woman and her two minor daughters in Nalanda district. The woman, Kavita Devi (28), allegedly died along with her daughters after being poisoned by her in-laws for not giving birth to a son, her family members claimed. Police said an FIR has been filed against six persons.

Kavita and her daughters—Sapna Kumari (5) and Gunjan Kumari (1)—were admitted to a hospital on Tuesday, where all three succumbed during treatment late at night, police said on Wednesday.


Sadar SDPO-II Sanjay Kumar Jaiswal said the victim’s family has alleged that Kavita was harassed for years by her in-laws over the demand for a male child. “The family claimed that Kavita and her daughters were fed food laced with poison, which led to their deaths,” he said.

Kavita, a resident of Vaswan Bigha village under Biharsharift police station area, was married in 2015 to Pintu Yadav of Jagnandanpur village under Rahui police station area. Pintu is currently engaged as a worker in Hyderabad.

Kavita’s father, Ramanand Yadav, said he was informed on Tuesday morning that his daughter and granddaughters had been admitted to a hospital. “When I reached there, I noticed injuries suggesting a struggle. Her hair appeared to have been pulled, and two fingers on her hand were cut and bandaged,” he said.

He alleged that the in-laws left the three at a private hospital and fled. “I shifted them to Pawapuri Medical College and Hospital, where all three died during treatment,” he said, adding that Kavita had repeatedly complained of harassment and threats over not having a son.

Ramanand further alleged that for four days prior to the incident, Kavita and her daughters were not given food or water, and the room containing rations and utensils had been locked.

Kavita’s brother, Piyush Kumar, said his last conversation with his sister was on Friday. “She said she had been isolated and denied food. She planned to come to our house on Tuesday, but after that there was no contact,” he said, alleging that the husband was planning to remarry.

Rahui SHO Lalit Vijay said an FIR has been registered against six named persons, including Kavita’s husband, Pintu Yadav. “The family has alleged that Pintu was the main conspirator. Raids are being conducted to arrest the accused, and further investigation is underway,” he said.
