Senior citizens have much to enjoy after their retirement

After spending their prime with piles of office files moving around and burden of disposing them of on time, most of the people are enjoying free time following their retirement from service. They play cards, do gardening and practice yoga, depending on their interests and capabilities.

PATNA: After spending their prime with piles of office files moving around and burden of disposing them of on time, most of the people are enjoying free time following their retirement from service. They play cards, do gardening and practice yoga, depending on their interests and capabilities.

“Now I can do all such things easily. I took to gardening after retirement. It helps me remain active even at this age.”
Nitin Kumar (65), who retired from Bihar Police, has set up a laughter club in his locality that helps him enjoy life. “The laughter club has given me an opportunity to spend quality time with my family and friends after serving the state for 35 years,” he said.
Another 68-year-old retired police officer, Mukesh Kumar spends his post-retirement time on visiting orphanages and poor children around the city. “The government should have taken the initiative. As it has failed, I am trying to do as much as I can for the orphans and poor children,” he said.
Retired teacher Shobha Sinha (61) told this newspaper that she prefers spending time on travelling to religious places. “I always wanted to travel but couldn’t because of my busy schedule. Being a teacher, it was not easy to skip classes and have fun. But after retirement, I am doing what I always wanted to. I have visited Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi among several other pilgrimage sites,” Shobha said.
Several other retired people are pursuing activities that are fun and keep them fit even while ageing. The 81-year-old Anu Jain, who retired as a schoolteacher, said: “I teach young girls as I have no piles of work or office waiting for me.”
Rajesh Mishra (60), who retired from state government job, said he was never able to give time to family and friends because of hectic work schedule. “Now I chill out whole day with my family and friends. We go to yoga clubs, play cards and travel together. Now, I realize what I had missed,” he said.
