Sarpanch dies after being attacked in village brawl in Madhepura
Madhepura: A sarpanch, who went to intervene in a quarrel between a drunk husband and his wife, died after he was hit by a sharp-edged weapon in Dhurgown village under Bharrahi outpost of Madhepura town police station in the district on Friday night. The deceased was identified as Ghanshyam Sharma (50).
Police said the youth, Guddu Kumar, was beating up his wife. Hearing the scream of the woman, the sarpanch along with some other villagers, rushed to rescue her. In the melee, the youth flung an axe on the sarpanch, hitting him on his head. He fell down unconscious on the ground.
People rushed the sarpanch to the Sadar Hospital, Madhepura, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way.
To protest the incident, people placed the body on the road and disrupted vehicular traffic on Madhepura-Purnia NH 107 near Gumti bridge. They were demanding immediate arrest of the assailant. The blockade was after assurance of arrest and action by the administration.
A local resident, Prashant Kumar Singh, alleged that the accused was grandson of elder brother of the sarpanch. His wife used to oppose his habit of drinking and taking drugs.
The police are yet to arrest the accused, said Amarnath Chauhan, SHO, Bharrahi.
